Our bishop actually told us that as priesthood holders, we have the right to correct anyone trying to propagate this quote. I can't imagine myself caring enough to correct anyone on this, but I also don't really think I need the priesthood to correct misquotes.
2) Is this the only apocryphal LDS story out there that needs correction?
3) Are we trying to squelch some prideful feelings among the youth?

Just weird.
Those are good thoughts. I usually keep my mouth shut because on the average Sunday I here so many things from members that are incorrect or obviously informed by incorrect beliefs that it is hard to know where to begin. Since its not my stewardship, and since 99% of the time these are pretty harmless errors, I just think "who cares?"

But then, I would have put that rumor into that category. I am glad anytime that the brethren clarify doctrine, but I do think it interesting that they chose this particular faith promoting rumor to debunk among the many. I wonder if this is a portent of things to come under President Monson. If so, it is most welcome.

I don't either.

You guys are killing my buzz. Just don't tell me that the story isn't true about the dude in the burning car whose entire body was burned except where he wore his garments.

I never believe clearly fabricated LDS legends either.

Sincerely,

The little boy who was being crushed by the garage door and was taken away by the "birdies" until his life was saved by medical personnel, and then saw the "birdies" again when I went to the temple.

In order to stave off bad luck, I forwarded your post to 10 of my friends, instructing them to do the same.
