I haven't seen it in years. Thats why I was so surprised to see myself unable to change the channel last night during the Baldwin special.

It still has its moments. That Samberg kid is hilarious. I DVR just for his digital shorts. I also think Amy Pohler (sp?) is very talented.

absolutely - I find Andy Samburg and his digital shorts very funny. Actually the current cast is pretty good. Not as good as the original cast, or the cast with Chris Farley, but still pretty good.

I TIVO SNL so I can skip through some of the stuff that is not that funny. 50% of the value of SNL is in the Weekend Update and the political skits.

I think those you listed were funnier post-SNL.
You go back and watch some of the old episodes...not the Best Of....but the regular episodes.....LOTS of boring sketches that went nowhere. Lots of silence.

The "old days" is a myth. The show has survived so long because it constantly adapts and launches a lot of huge talent.

Truthfully, looking back, Chevy Chase stumbling around as a drunken Gerald Ford was funny then.....it wouldnt be funny now....too Keystone Kop.

Also, back then, they rarely made an effort to actually look like the people they portrayed. They simply declared that they were a certain public figure and starting talking.

The show is much better these days in many aspects and there are just as many classic sketches in the modern era than there were in the old days.

The gems from the early episodes are great, though. And it is cool to see some of the music guests back in their infancy.

Wasn't Steve Martin on the original a lot?

Didn't he do the Egyptian thing on SNL?

Is it still on at midnight?

he was a frequent guest, but never an official cast member, or even a "featured player."

He did do King Tut, he was a Wild and Crazy guy, played the banjo, etc on SNL.

Frankly, as a host, he has been on more than most anybody (tom hanks, alec baldwin are up there, too, maybe more), but frankly, besides the really old sketches, I am not sure he has done too many super memorable ones in the last 15 or so years. He may have belted out a random funny one, but I cant seem to recall any recurring sketches based on the popularity of the character.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me!

the King Tut skit was deemed hilarious by me and my crew, back in the day. And the VD hopping onto his lip.

There are others too but these were off the top of my head. Pre-Eddie Murphy is definitel some of the best stuff, but you are missing some fantastic comedic performances. just imho. Then again, we don't think the same things are funny so maybe it is not too surprising.
David Spade, Kevin Nealon, and Rob Schneider? They're barely amusing. Not even close to being funny. Adam Sandler is hugely overrated, and Jon Lovitz was only funny as the pathological liar. Mike Meyers, Chris Rock, and Dennis Miller are the only ones on your list that are consistently funny.

BTW, why did you exclude Norm MacDonald from the list? I can't think of anyone who was funnier doing Weekend Update.

Norm is a genius. and I have enjoyed Justin Timberlake guesting on the show. His spoof of punked and dick in a box will be classics. The kid is a overall talent.
