The old saying is the book is better than the movie. But not always. On rare occasions the movie is better.

Here are some:

The Godfather

Ben-Hur

The Maltese Falcon (just barely; it's close but the movie noses out the book)

Bladerunner

Lord of the Rings? (blasphemy I know but I bet a case could be made)

Others?

Field of Dreams was based on Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella. Movie is much better. Book isn't bad though, especially considering the author believes nothing that he wrote and went to great lengths to state that.

The Sound of Music is probably a lot better than Maria Von Trapp's book, though I never read it.

The Tom Clancy movies. I could never really get into his books, but I enjoyed most of the movies. The one exception is the one where Ben Affleck starred as Jack Ryan, Sum of all Fears. I haven't read the book, but if it's worse than the movie then shame on Tom Clancy.

Sorry, that particular post must be one of the few I didn't commit to memory.

It is safe to say that the movies are better than 'skimming' the books.

No I found the characters of the books much more interesting and compelling than those of the movie.
