"Don't Stop Believing" - Styx, or was it Journey, or was it Foreigner, . . . .

I am not a Classic Rock connoisseur, so my list isnt going to include anything revelatory. Further, I am not sure how "classic rock" is defined. Now that it is almost 2010, you could make an argument that early 80s music is now classic rock. I tend to think of it as 60s and 70s stuff, but this could be wrong.

Also, I have intentionally left the Beatles off, simply because I think they are better than all these other bands put together.

But here are some of mine in no order:

The Who - My Generation
Van Mo - Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance
Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird
Led Zep - Stairway, Immigrant Song
The Kinks - Lola
Clapton/Derek -Layla
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
Creedence - Bad Moon Rising, Down on the Corner, Fortunate Son
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
Stones - Paint it Black, Brown Sugar
3 Dog Night - Joy to the World
Jimi - Purple Haze, Foxy

man, this list could get really, really long. I didnt include any singles from mid-to-late 70s hits fro Foreigner, Yes, ELO, The Eagles, etc etc...

This is a fun thread, though. I think I am going to take everyone's suggestions and make an ultimate classic rock playlist on itunes.

THis is a good list. I prefer Won't Get Fooled Again to My Generation as The Who's entry, however. I also am not sure if 3dog night should be here. A classic song, surely, but more classic pop than rock, IMO. Quick Trivia, without googling, does anyone know who worte Joy to the World and what other 3 Dog Night hit song he also penned and what else he did as a career?

Would it surprise anyone to know that I have been in bands that have covered almost every song on the list (no moon dance or immigrant song)? Some of the covers maybe not so good, but man were we earnest.

Like you, I'm not a genuine connoisseur, but those would all make my list. I'd add The Doors "Light My Fire", not because of the lyrics, to be sure, but I loved that song when it came out. To the Kinks, I'd add "You Really Got Me", and I like Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic, complete with kazoo backup.

Among the more obscure, I'd include Spirit's "I Got a Line On You" and The Byrd's "I'll Probably Feel a Whole Lot Better." This thread has inspired me to update my iPod playlist.

Good additions. Also, we should add the most unlikely name for an artist that had a hit: Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky.

Upon further reflection, can anyone name a better song that includes a kazoo riff than Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic?

A good friend in high school composed "Moonlight O'er Milpitas" that our stage band performed in faux tribute to a neighboring burg. The trumpet section stood and performed the bridge section with kazoos. Other than that possible exception, though, I think Hendrix wins.

Good old Milpitas. I only remember that name because of this really cool mini golf place they had there in the 80s.
