According to the news this AM, the CNN reporter Sanjay Gupta is the leading name for the surgeon general in the Obama administration. When I heard this I just about wrecked my car on the way to work. It appears to me that Obama is more interested in picking rockstars and former Clinton administration officials rather than changing the face of DC or even picking people who would be legitimate contributors in their fields. A mentor of one of the surgeons with whom I work trained with this Sanjay Gupta and said that he is a loser of a physician who barely made it through his residency and went into broadcasting b/c he couldn't make it in private practice. Regardless, what qualifications does this guy have to be the surgeon general, steering the health policy of our country? There are hundred of other physicians who could help solve many serious medical issues in this country.

His main qualifications: excellent communicator, and name recognition.

And that's why C. Everett Koop is remembered. The ones since are only remembered for their gaffes.
