Basso to Disco
http://sports.yahoo.com/sc/news;_ylt...v=ap&type=lgns
The innocent says this is great, a tutor for the younger guys and a likely grand tour winner. The cynic says he now can learn how to cheat without being caught. I hate that everything I read about this sport that I love comes with such baggage in my mind. In any event, my provblems aside, this is a great get for LA, Johan and Disco, and will likely mean that we will see Disco on the TdF podium again, unless Basso was jacked up on HGH or EPO and will now decline if he tries to ride clean. We will see. It might make Popo a little upset however. Interesting stuff.

Won't he be serving a 2 year suspension for his doping?

Not likely. He was cleared by the Italian Federation and there was no clear evidence of doping from Operacion Puerto. He could still be caught up in it later, I suppose, but my understanding is that as of now he is clear to ride and make Bjarne Riis cry in his pasta every night in July.

This is excellent news, imo. Team Disco could be absolutely huge this year. I just hope that Leipheimer will take the news well. He and Basso are a pretty incredible 1-2 punch.
What are the chances that he rides the Tour de California as a way to build good will with his new American employers??? |

I dont' care about Team Disco. I care about Americans. An American team is only American if it has Americans.

I think the guy is a class act, and would be willing to bet he finds his way to the podium at least once next year in a grand tour and wouldn't be surprised to see him pull a Giro/Tour double. He's that good. This past year, I've come to believe that everyone in cycling is doping and most are doping equally effectively. Thus, when everyone removes the good stuff from their diets, the playing field will be equal once again with the same guys on top - Basso, Ullrich, etc... |
