To be honest, I have only a dim recollection of 1985. I think I may have suppressed memories, and I'll be danged if I will go see anyone to have them unsupressed. They are just fine where they are now.

5. UNR 2002 - This was the first game I was able to see in person in about 5 years after heading returning from the midwest for grad school. The look of complete confidence on the faces of the BYU lineman while coming out of the tunnel at halftime is indelibly marked in my memory, especially after getting spanked so badly in the second half. Not only did it mark the beginning of the end for the next several years, but them sumbiches at the stadium ran out of water at the concession stands shortly after halftime on a day when temps were well into the 90's. And this after they made me pour out several liters of water to get into the stadium. If ever there were just cause to crack open a cold Miller or Bud, it was on that dark, sunny day in Reno.

Two more memories from that game:

1) Goose and I and a couple of other families in our ward caravaned to that ill fated game and stayed at the Golden Phoenix. It turned out that this was the same hotel that the UNR players stayed in the night before the game. As goose and I left our rooms to meet up with some other friends we were stopped by a security guard sitting on a chair in our hallway. "Coach says nobody leaves the hotel" he informed us. We got a good laugh out of that. I told him that if he thought we were on the team, that his Wolfpack was in a lot more trouble than he knew. It turned out that we had about the only 2 rooms on that floor with no football players. I had two knocks on the door that night from UNR players looking for their buddies.

2) The walk of shame we had to take out of that crappy stadium. The drunken, porn moustached Reno fans chanting "BYU-who?" as if they had just invented the saying. It truly was awful.

Happily, after getting smoked the following week at Iowa State, BYU's newfangled passing offense got untracked. The Cougs had averaged around 7 points a game to that point, and then averaged 30+ until the powers of darkness separated Sheide's shoulder in the Fiesta Bowl.

Even during the Crowton years (and I was at Reno and later witnessed the CSU and Boise State demolitions) I never felt as bad about the state of BYU football as I did that ugly night against USU.

It really is the darkest before dawn.

I was at that USU/BYU game. I remember the score being 9-6 in favor of the Aggies, but I don't remember the players fighting. I was probably too busy standing at the top of Cougar Stadium chucking ice chunks as far as I could into the parking lot.
