For those not familiar with Fred Phelps and his congregation, they are not a church in any normal sense of the word. Their only concern is homosexuality, and they will protest anywhere they can get publicity, most famously funerals of servicemen and women, but also 9/11 events, funerals of the Minneapolis bridge collapse and, really, any other place where there will be reporters. As Mike said, GBH's funeral is an odd place to protest, as, for better or worse, you would hardly call him a gay-enabler, but there will be a media presence there, so off they go.
Maybe they are also upset that Mormons have been preaching tolerance and love toward Gay people. Fred is not in the "Hate the sin, love the Sinner" camp. He is more like a "Hate the sin, hope the sinner dies a terrible death, then laugh at him as he goes to Hell" kind of guy. I'm just guessing, though. I can't acces his website at work. His congregation is not large, and almost all of them are family members of Phelps, so this is not a huge movement. |

So in a conflict of interests, the protestors were given a permit to protest on the southeast corner of the conference center.
Meanwhile, the church announced that tickets to the funeral will be distributed on a first-come basis, beginning at 9am, with the line to begin at the north gate of temple square. The Salt Lake Tribune expects people to start lining up Friday night. So in other words, those waiting for funeral tickets will be only 100 feet away from the protestors, having to listen to their drivel for hours. |

I woudn't pay any attention to lunatic fringers like this. They don't represent any segment of society that matters. You might as well stop and debate with some addled homeless person shouting gibberish.

Yeah, they hate everybody. There's nothing special about this hate.

This group is the reason the Patriot Guard was created. The Patriot Guard are motorcyclists from all over the country who ride to the funerals of servicemen and stand between the funeral and these exact same protestors, making a human wall of badassedness to keep the funeral goers from having to see the protestors. They are often a rough looking crowd, but I've been very impressed with them and the fact that they do it at every funeral. I wouldn't be surprised see them do it at Hinckley's funeral. I'm sure there's a Utah contingent.

According to their website, their protest of Pres. Hinckley's funeral is in retaliation for the LDS doctrine of "As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may become." And to make it clear to the funeral-goers that Pres. Hinckley is now in Hell for believing that heresy.
