It was reported that in Desert Storm fewer US soldiers died than would have otherwise died of car accidents, shootings, etc if they had stayed at their normal bases.

That same tidbit has also been reported during the current Iraq War (in particular by Brit Hume), even though it's not even close to being true.

But I don't doubt that this could have been true during the first war.
