Default Men on a Mission Calendars

The dude who created and produced these, Chad Hardy, got ex'd from the church. Said he thought it was a "little harsh" on the news tonight . . . .

Interesting quote from the article:

Quote:
On Friday a church spokeswoman declined to comment on Hardy or the calendar, but said that ''any church discipline is the result of actions not beliefs." Decisions are made at the local level and are based on individual circumstances and merits, spokeswoman Kim Farah said.

Just what we were discussing in the other thread.

Sounds like he made it easy for them. I'm inferring from six years of inactivity and his nonchalant attitude that he didn't care. Still, doesn't anyone else see this as an overreaction of the first order? He made a calendar with some guys with their shirts off for crying out loud. I do understand the need to proscribe the influence of apostates, but this? What am I missing here? This will encourage his repentance?

Don't worry Gidge, the chances that you and Surfah's Bishop or SP read this board is slim. :-)

Obviously we don't know the reasoning of the council, but the handbook cites three purposes of discipline (from memory): (1) to save the transgressor, (2) to protect the innocent, and (3) to protect the good name of the church.

I suspect that this situation was precipitated by the need for the 3rd.

That is true, people everywhere were probably associating that calendar with the church. I mean, seriously Tex? I think they should excommunicate Janice Perry and Lex deAzavedo for years of crappy music that people undoubtedly associate with the church.

Maybe they got back there and said what can we do to call the maximum amount of attention to this thing? How can we martyr this guy and reinforce some negative stereotypes about the church? Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
