Night the Lights Went out in Georgia. I don't particularly like it but it is a murder ballad, and it's the third song I've mentioned in these threads that ends with "Georgia." So I couldn't resist.

Don't Take Your Guns to Town is another great Cash murder tune.
Devil's Right Hand, a Steve Earl song, is very well done by the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings). (ignore the video, this is the only Highwaymen version I could find of that song.) |

How about Motley's "You're All I Need"?
The blade of my knife Faced away from your heart Those last few nights It turned and sliced you apart This love that I tell Now feels lonely as hell From this padded prison cell So many times I said You'd only be mine I gave my blood and my tears And loved you cyanide When you took my lips I took your breath Sometimes loves better off dead Youre all I need, make you only mine I love you so I set you free I had to take your life Youre all I need, youre all I need And I loved you but you didnt love me Laid out cold Now were both alone But killing you helped me keep you home I guess it was bad Cause love can be sad But we finally make the news Tied up smiling I thought you were happy Never opened your eyes I thought you were napping I got so much to learn About love in this world But we finally made the news Youre all I need, make you only mine I loved you so, so I put you to sleep. |

If we're allowed to go new school here I'd submit The Killers' "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine".
We took a walk that night, but it wasn't the same We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go She couldn't scream while I held Her close I swore I'd never let her go Tell me what you wanna know Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on There ain't no motive for this crime Jenny was a friend of mine So come on, oh come on, oh come on I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time For me to go, so let me know if it's alright I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth She couldn't scream while I held Her close I swore I'd never let her go Tell me what you wanna know Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on And then you whisper in my ear I know what you're doing here So come on, oh come on, oh come on There ain't no motive for this crime Jenny was a friend of mine Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on |

I don't if this is a ballad, but my favorite song concerning the subject is Better than Ezra's "One More murder in this town."
It very well captures what I believe to be the public's collusion in and acceptance of murder. |

Girlfriend in a Coma has absolutely nothing to do with murder, though.

Two songs by Cross Canadian Ragweed:
Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah - Jealous boyfriend kills lover. Originally written and performed by Willy Braun of Reckless Kelly. Both versions are good. Wanna Rock and Roll - Another jealous boyfriend kills lover. Also performed by Ray Wylie Hubbard. Not sure who wrote it. But the CCR version is much better.
