Default Michael Schermer piece on "game theory" and why athletes dope

I thought this was an interesting read in the April issue of Scientific American. Here is the article and here is one of the interesting graphics they use to show why cheating became a rational option over the years.




His suggestions for fixing the problem seem a bit Polyanna, but if a league actually enforced his rules, I bet they would work.

I thought it was funny also how Schermer almost goes out of his way to say that Lance cheated without saying that Lance cheated or even mentioning his name. I think just about every quote in the article comes from a former Armstrong teammate or physician.

For those who may not know Schermer, he writes for Scientific American and I believe he's the owner/editor of Skeptic magazine. He's also a former professional cyclist.
