For a freeloader like me there are few opportunities in life quite as exciting as being present when almost-wealthy suburbanites try to soothe their social guilt on some issue or another while simultaneously trying to make sure that the rest of us know they are almost wealthy. In my home neighborhood, for example, the Bike to Work support stations consisted of a card table with little dixie cups of kool-aid and water available for bike riders to take as they go by, accompanied by kind words of encouragement such as "hey lard butt, you should do this more often!" At the aid station near my office, however, where the median home value swells to PaloAltoCoug-esque dimensions, the aid stations were giving away canvas tote bags that contained local street, trail and bike path maps, water bottles, bottles of water, pens, laser key rings, seat post blinkies, cliff bars and various other items. THey also had fruit, bagels and sports drinks available, in case of bonking. I felt like an Oscar invitee.

ANother benfit of Bike to Work day for me, at least, is that i was able to pass almost everyone on the path, and I finally found knidred spirits who are also willing to test the limits of the stretch in stretch-to-fit lycra shorts. Yes, indeed, a good morning to be a cheap bike rider.

Any other morning ride reports? I am most curious to know if Il Pad was able to navigate hi sbike to work without incident!

You got laser key rings AND a seat post blinkie?!?!?!?! Lucky!!!

I was able to safely navigate our narrow and beat up city streets for the 4 mile ride into work this morning. Not only were there no aid stations along the way, but there were no cyclists to be seen. We have a very active cycling community, but we are totally devoid of any cycling advocacy groups. Thus, no aid stations or any real mention anywhere of bike-to-work day, week or month.

But still, I enjoyed the short ride into work and look forward to taking the long way home, even though it should be about 100 degrees by 5:00.
