Default Who here has read the Koran?

It would go a long way to understanding the hate and what drives the fanaticism of the radical muslims.

I've read it (ok most of it) and it does not drive hate at least not anymore than the old testament espouse killing your enemies

I understand that most Muslims do not approve of the Koran being translated.

So out of respect for them, I will probably abstain from reading (parts of it) again.

I've read portions. It is a fascinating document. I think, like many sacred works, it is very malleable in the hands of a skilled teacher or orator. You can find pretty much whatever you want in the Koran with respect to killing or not, although its langugage is at times startingly frank with respect to killing non-believers. Even so, I think most of the problems we encounter stem not from the Koran itself bu how it has benn operationalized by those who claim to underestand it.

In terms of content it is similar to the Old Testament ... in terms of tone and intent it is a masterful diatribe against the unclean of the earth.

I've read translation parts, and found it for the most part, boring.

The language is too flowery for my tastes, the message too mundane, but I suppose in the hands of a gifted scholar I might grow to appreciate it.

I didn't get any sense of great religiosity from it, but perhaps that was a result of my lack of insight. I actually found the translation of Al Ghazali's the Incoherence of the Philosophers more interesting.
