well, we can be assured it wasn't because she was a marriage counselor at BYU.

I think she was a few years before Emma knew, but I"m not sure. I do know that after a while rumors were circulating that Joseph was having an affair with her and Emma publicly defended him. I believe it was Oliver Cowdery (but not sure) that accused him of having an affair to the high council, for which he was reprimanded

You are correct. Cowdery accused Joseph of adultery with Alger to the High Council, saying Joseph had admitted it to him. Joseph did not deny the relationship but vehemently denied that it was adultery (as he had married her). Cowdery eventually admitted that while Joseph had informed him of the relationship, Joseph had never admitted to adultery. I can find no exact date or length of time that passed before Emma found out. But it seems to have been a few years.

As for why Joseph chose her, I think her parents were close friends with a trusted friend of Joseph, so he felt safe that they wouldn't spill the beans and make it public.

Questions:

How old was she when Joseph 'married' her?

Was there a legal standard of marraige at the time? Or was Joseph able to 'marry her' simly because he was the prophet, and declared it so, and then had sex with her.

Christ said that if a man THINKS about adultary, he has committed the sin in his heart.

If I imagine in graphic detail having Brooke Shields as my polygamous wife, is it no longer 'adultary in my mind?' 'Cause we would be MARRIED in my mind.

Wow. That is an interesting web page. I wonder what kind of reputation it has for scholarly content? Reading the back story for the first few wives is like reading the MO of a sexual predator...

Joseph would invite a woman to live in his home under innocent terms, or he would be invited to live in the home of a woman (and her husband) under innocent terms. He would then turn up the charm. Appeal to his religious authority, and Marry these women/girls in secret. He would then, presumably, enjoy the privileges of marriage.

Lucky guy.

One thing I was aware of, but didnt' realize how OFTEN it happened, is the fact that the early church practice of polygamy was actually polyandry. Joseph had no problem sharing a woman with another man, so long as he had his night.

How many threads back was the polyandry discussion?

There is no evidence that Joseph ever had sex with wives that were currently married to other husbands. The topic was discussed ad nauseum a while back.
