From England's standpoint, it is a relatively easy draw because two of their three games are practically guaranteed wins. Before the draw, the 32 teams are separated into four groups: the first group is basically the top 8 ranked teams, the second is 9-16, the third is 17-24, and the fourth is 25-32. However they are not the top 32 ranked teams in FIFA; different regions are guaranteed x-number of spots for example Africa has 6, South America has 5, etc. So there are always teams with world rankings in the 20s that get left out, and upstart teams that get on a hot streak and surprise everyone.
The England/USA group is considered "easy" because the other two (Slovenia and Algeria) were near the bottom of their pre-draw groups. Slovenia lucked out in their qualifying round by being paired with San Marino (who scored 1 goal and gave up 48 in their ten games), and because they had the opportunity to RUTS San Marino, they won a tiebreaker with Russia that was based on total goal differential. Algeria went into the final round of the African qualifying ranked 56th in the world, and scored a huge 1-0 upset over Egypt to make the cup. Everyone expects England to win all 3 games in their group; USA to lose to England but beat the other two; and it's a toss up between the other two. The top two advance to the round of 16. BTW today's live draw had 250 million viewers, about 3x more than the Super Bowl, and 7x more than the BCS Championship game. |
