Default McCain in the debate tonight

I probably shouldn't have, but I watched it.

It's no great secret that I am no fan of John McCain, but I thought tonight's performance was especially inexcusable.

- With respect to the mortgage problems he said there are some "greedy Wall Street people that should be punished."
- He persisted in the stupid lie about Romney's "timetable" answer.
- He was completely unconvincing on immigration. There's no question he'd vote for his bill if it came to the floor again.
- He said he worked in the public sector (instead of the private) out of a desire for "patriotism, not for profit."
- He took a shot at Romney for people that may have lost their jobs in his companies.

In short, he appeared irritable and especially combative, certainly not like a guy who just won pole position.

Romney's still a longshot, and I don't think this debate will end up changing many minds, but what a disaster for a Republican is John McCain.

Romney didn't land the knockout blow he needed.

Why no statement like "Straight talk express is firmly parked on BS Avenue?"

Why not blasting him for saying Romney was working for profit and even laid people off? Romney should have asked if McCain has a problem with business and profit in America.

Romney had dozens of easy openings, and once again he got weak in the knees. Even when he went to call McCain a liar tonight, he would up instead saying "you are just being inaccurate." Whatever. Grow a pair and call it like it is or get out.

a lot of criticism of McCain's performance on Texags, while yesterday there had been a lot of glee and joy that McCain had won.

I just can't see McCain standing in front of the GOP in the convention, with all the streamers and hats and everyone yelling joyously. I just can't imagine it. It's for this reason that I don't think things are sewn up. Somehow McCain is hard to like, even if you tend to agree with him.

Yes, that was frustrating, but I don't know the best route. I'm sure Mitt wanted to scream, but his better angel kept him from doing so. That said, the CNN focus group of undecided Repubs really liked Romney's responses and couldn't stand McCain. It was interesting that Romney got some applause and nary a sound for McCain.

These debates have gotten very formulaic, everybody repeating their talking points. Hence, the only excitement is generated by arguing over the size of the table. I don't know how really helpful they are.

WHAM!!!!!!!!!! POW!!!

Mr. McCain shot back, with a smile: “Let me note that I was endorsed by your two hometown newspapers, who know you best, including the very conservative Boston Herald. And I guarantee you, The Arizona Republic will be endorsing me, my friend.”

Sweeeeet!

Exactly, and that is essentially what CNN's focus group said. They came tonight looking for some affirmation of McCain as the candidate and were sorely dissapointed. They wanted to believe, but went away confused.

Put that guy from tonight's debate up against Hillary and Hillary looks like the gleeful extrovert. Radical Islamic terroism, tap codes, whispers, foot solider in the Reagan Revolution, blah blah blah. The guy needs a personality makeover.

McCain blew it tonight.

I really wonder why McCain is a Republican, at key moments he's sided with democrats, joyously giving conservatives the finger, all while proclaiming "I'm a conservative." We can't get excited for him, partly because we know he doesn't like us.

It'll be Bob Dole all over again, except at least Bob Dole was likable.
