Default How can they call a state when less that 1% of the precincts are in?

Second Question, how can they call a state for Obama when McCain is leading in the polls?

They called Oklahoma with 0% reporting.

MRD, here's CNN's projection process:

I see Utah's been called for McCain. Shocking, I say.

Let's hope this is a repeat of '04 when Kerry had the election won by 4:00PM eastern time.

Ditto for Utah. Polls closed in Utah at 8:00 pm. At 8:01 pm, NBC called Utah for McCain. I am not kidding.

I saw. I'm surprised they even waited for the polls to close. I'm curious to see which one McCain wins by the wider margin, Oklahoma or Utah.

Exit polls. It seems that they use some raw data from exit polls throughout the day to call a state.

Utah had a 2006 population of 2.6 million, with 978,000 of that (40%) in Salt Lake County.

Exit polling in Salt Lake County presently has Obama with a 56-42% lead over McCain, yet they call Utah for McCain.

I don't get it either.

Because the rest of the state will be 80% for McCain.

Right. It's not exit polling alone, but it's heavily based on exit polling. And when exit polling shows one candidate winning to an extent that's a certain measure past (that is to say, wayyyy past) the margin of error, they'll call the state even with 0% of the precincts reporting.
