Even so, many of the policies that BYU adopts are above and beyond church policies, even if they may be based on principles that the church teaches. There's just something unsettling about the fact that a man with a beard, for example, though he may be worthy to enter the Lord's house, is unworthy to attend the Lord's university. I'm not really saying that BYU is a "group whose teachings or practices are contrary or oppose those accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints." There are some glaring inconsistencies, however. I know the reasons why they exist, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.

If caffeine is an addictive substance, and the word of wisdom involves avoiding addictive substances, why does the church own stock in the Coca-Cola Corp?
Like with the abortion clinic example: one can own the stock as a means of making money. Just don't indulge in the addiction. |

You could ask the same question about gambling. If the church is so opposed to gambling, why did they sell all of their Vegas land to the casinos? Same thing. I guess it is part of living in the world. |

If it is not fact, then why don't you post a comprehensive list of all of the church's assets. Be sure to delete the Coca-Cola stock. Then everyone will look up to you as such a wise little ninja.

You may want to re-check your facts. There is no way to conclusively prove or disprove that the church owns stock in Coke. We can only say with certainty that they are not listed as owning more than 5% of stock of Coke (which would be worth over 5 billion dollars). He could still be right. None of us will likely ever know without a family member on the inside. |

My brother in law worked on Church investments. They are careful about its investments. I can't speak for Coca Cola, but personally it doesn't bother that I am making double contributions, once to the Church and once to Diet Coke foundation created solely out of my purchases.

I'm not saying they don't. But you won't find my posting "the Church does not have stock in Coca-Cola" as fact. |
