Over here in the Eastern Sierra, all of the ranger stations where you would get your permits, also have bear canister for rent for $5 for your entire trip. Well worth it.
I take back the canister is the only option. A few years back they were making bear bags that were make of some sort of kevlar material. you just don't wnat something that a bear can get a hold of and take it with him. Double bagged in plastic bags isn't going to do it. I have seen car doors peeled off because a bear wanted to get at someones chapstick.
DO all ranger stations have the canister rentals? That's a good tip. When we went out this summer we picked up our permit in Auburn but I don't recall seeing anything about canister rentlas. I will ask next time. Thanks for the input.
