The only problem with that would be if you did go to war and were in a combat area. If you're in that kind of situation the Assistant's responsibility changes and his primary concern becomes the security of the Chaplain. You're his driver, body guard, etc...

Some chaplains come from military backgrounds and then switch to the chaplaincy. They have some skills but most don't go that route and would be completely lost in any tactical situation.

Most chaplain assistants aren't much better but if you want to be any "good" at it you should be really good at basic infantry skills, land nav., etc...
