The PI call
that call reminded me of a flag football game I was in. League game during med school.
I played safety, and though I still have wheels, I REALLY had wheels then. I think I had about a pick a game. But anyway, guy is going on a fly, I am right behind him on D. I look back to see the ball, and I am like, I got you MFer, this is my ball. So I accelerate to get to the ball, while looking back at it, and completely run over the lard receiver who never would have had a chance at it. PI on me. I was pissed. |

that and it's not PI if the ball is uncatchable.

I thought he had a chance to catch it. That part of the PI call is based on judgement and I don't disagree with the ref's judgement on that play. It would have been a heck of a catch, but I don't think it was impossible.

I look at it this way. If BYU were Utah in this game, every Cougar would have been calling for a flag too. So it must have been a good call.

Of course, we're always a lot less clumsy in our memories than we are in real life.
I still seethe about an intramural flag football non-call where I was running to try to catch a guy running up the sidelines when the offensive player just slammed me and knocked me down. No call. I hope both the player and the ref burn in hell for that.

The PI call reminded me of the '02 Fiesta Bowl, it took the ref a long time to throw the flag. I guess he must have been "reviewing it in his mind". I thought it was PI, I was surprised it took him that long to call it.

I think it took so long because he was 30 yards from the play and he couldnt really see.

I didn't think the ball was catchable. On the goalpost camera angle it looked like the ball was thrown about 4 feet behind him.
But they really didn't have much choice as to whether they could throw the flag or not. I agree that if it had been a BYU receiver making a play on the ball with the game on the line I would have wanted a call as well. |
