"Smith never fully recovered from a separated right shoulder that he sustained Sept. 30 when Seattle defensive tackle Rocky Bernard sacked him on the third play of that game. Smith missed two games and tried to return. Clearly, the shoulder bothered him. After three ineffective games, Smith disclosed the extent of his injury. He has not played since the 49ers' game Monday, Nov. 12, at Seattle."
