Michael Phelps is turning in some really dominating performances. His latest feat was stealing the 100 Fly gold from World Record holder Ian Crocker. Phelps now has 6 golds with 2 events remaining. The US in general is looking very good heading into the '08 Beijing games.
http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimmi...ory?id=2819947 USA Swimming's newest star is Cullen Jones, an African American swimmer who is emerging as a the World's best sprinter. Here's an article about his recent performances. He'll be a big star at the '08 games with everyone wondering if he can beat Popov's WR in the 50 free. http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimmi...ory?id=2819581 |

Here's a video of the 4 x 100 Free Relay from last year's Pan/Pac games in which team USA broke the world record. This was the official emergence of Cullen Jones as a star.

I hate to raise this issue, but with the story about Thorpe's testorone levels coming out this week and with Phelps and the boys re-writing the record books, does this make anyone else wonder if there are illegal drugs being used?

Yes. He's so dominant this year after "struggling" a bit last year (struggling meaning he didn't win everything he entered). When I saw that headline I admit I wonder if swimming is affected. My hope is that Thorpe was just having a tough time coming to grips with the fact that he's aging and that Phelps is the new king. But nothing surprises me anymore.

Phelps' final tally: 7 gold medals and 5 World Records. He was hoping to break the record for most gold medals in a world championship but team USA was DQ'd in the I/M relay and for the first time in history did not make it to the finals (where a gold medal was a virtual lock).

Check out this abridged version of the 400I/M in which he shaved 2 seconds off of the World Record. I've never seen somebody so far ahead of the world record line. It's a full body length.

You should see the Munich races of Spitz in the 100 and 200 fly. It was truly amazing.

He was so far ahead, it took decades for some of his records to be surpassed.
