We applied for Catholic adoption of transracial children but were turned down for whatever reason. We might apply again.

If only 20% of black kids adopted from foster care are adopted into white families, and the overwhelming number of adoptive parents are white, then that tells me that not many black kids are being adopted at all from foster care.

That would seem to be the most important issue. Instead of putting barriers in front of white couples, why not do something to encourage black folks to marry in greater numbers, and adopt?

I have a cousin who is poly. I knew a family in Houston that adopted a black girl from foster care. Pelagius has probably met this girl.

I also have a friend who adopted a girl from China.
Indy knows this pretty well, apparently. There is a dire shortage of foster parents and people willing to adopt any kid (compared to those who want to adopt white babies).

The priority for placing kids in state custody after the parental rights have been terminated, is qualified family members first (uncles, grandparents, etc), then pretty much anyone who qualifies (based on sufficient income to support the kids and a safe home, including checks for crimes for the adoptive parents and frequent visitors). There are special provisions for American Indians, because there is concern about past forced assimilation. That makes it even harder to get quality placements -- more restrictions, fewer qualified prospective parents.

I know a couple who are white, they adopted 4 Korean orphans. I'm sure they might get some odd looks from time-to-time when the whole family is out in public but they are a very happy and well adjusted family.

If the black community is so concerned they need to step up recruiting of good AA adoptive parents.

It just shows you how screwed up adoption is in the USA, that many families don't want to deal with it, and go out of the country to adopt.

My friends who adopted a Chinese girl, they didn't want to mess with an open adoption and all that. Even in close adoptions, they are not necessarily closed.

The international adoption is the sure thing.

I agree that adopting internationally is safer and better. And when we were told, that not being Catholic and not being black hurt us, we were disappointed.

I think most people want babies. It seems that there are more children available for adoption under age 2 internationally than through foster care.

Amen. How many people go abroad to adopt a child who is 9 or whatever?

You won't often find babies available for adoption through the foster care system because in general it would take time for parental rights to be terminated. Parental rights are substantive due process rights, and there are procedural due process issues as well.

Child welfare is also, in general, about the best interests of the child. Don't you think that any individual child would probably do better in a family with which s/he shares a racial or ethnic heritage. So it makes perfect sense for the policy to favor that. Of course, if those homes are not available, you move to the next level.

Tis true; I have. She is almost the same age as my oldest daughter. They also adopted her slightly younger brother.
