Missile defense system...

From what I have read, our missile defense system is far from reliable right now. It looks like we are activating the system to shoot down a North Korean test missile.

If it works, it would sure send a strong message to Kim Jong-il. If it doesn't work, it could be quite embarrassing for us.

Seems like a big risk for an unproven system. Maybe it is better than we have been led to believe?

My weapons systems nerds friends from grad school say that there is small chance that it will work anytime soon. I don't know much myself. It would be nice to have it work well, but if memory serves it did not work well under testing a couple of years back. A pleasant surprise would be very nice.

Activating it to protect in the event they shoot at us, or activating to shoot down their test?

My understanding is we activated it to shoot down the missile regardless of whether it is a test or actually shot at us.

I find it amusing that questioning the effectiveness of our missile defense system is equated with being anti-patriotic. Perhaps you are unaware that the system has performed very poorly in tests so far? Rumsfeld expressed concern about the system. I always knew he hated America.

Apparently, you think it is the greatest system known to man with no room for improvement. That must be the standard for loving America. Apologies for falling short of that. Me and Rummy will promptly depart from this country in search of a better home. If we can't praise our missile system, the terrorists have already won.
