Default Ute Fans, where do they come from?

I was speaking to a client who used to be a big BYU fan, donated plenty of money to the Cougar Club, etc. He had pretty good seats back in the day... Until one year, 1990 to be exact, his seats were moved from near mid-field to the goal line. He called the Cougar Club and they said that due to playing Miami that year, Ty Detmer? and bunch of other factors, they couldn't do anything about moving him back. So he shows up to the Miami game and asks the people around him how they got their tickets. A good number of them were grandkids and other relatives of General Authorities... It pissed him off so bad, he didn't renew his Cougar Club membership, nor his season tickets. He then joined the crimson club and bought ute season tickets from then on and now he despises BYU.

I then read SU's dad was offended by a BYU fan or something and now he cheers for utah and hates BYU.

The stories are endless I guess. So what the hell? Were most ute fans BYU fans at one point? The grew up cheering for the Cougars and then they "see the light" (get offended) and then start cheering for the utes by default? I know there a generational utes, but I'm learning more and more ute fans are made up of a bunch of thin skinned ex-Cougar fans who try and capitalize on the Y fan stereo types.

Discuss.

Hell no.... I have never been a byu fan...If anything we should be questioning you and your sports adultery (attending Utah while being a byu fan)

Look... I only wanted to go to the U my whole life. I still remember playing football in back of the south stands and sitting on the "UTAH" cement. Everyone in my family is a utah fan (except my black sheep canadian brother)

My dad still talks about if george foster hadn't have broken his leg utah would have won the 66 NCAA (instead of Texas western)

like I said, I understand there are some utah fans who are just utah fans, but many ute fans seem to cheer for utah with a vendetta against BYU... it's wierd.

as for me attending the university of utah? i don't anymore.. it was a dark period in my life and i have repented.

I have never met a utah fan who used to be a byu fan.
and i know a lot of them.

and many byu fans have a vendetta against utah. I don't think it's weird, it's a rivalry.

However, this general attitude that to be a utah fan "something" must have happened, is one the reasons (and there are many) that ute fans despise zoobs.

It is a far stretch to apply your sample of two experiences to the majority of the Utah fan base. I am a Ute fan because that is where I received my BA. I don't despise BYU, otherwise I wouldn't spend time on this site.

I'm a Utah fan because I'm from SLC and went to Utah. If I were from Provo (god forbid), I might be a cougar fan. It's all about home team.

Brother, I was on that blacktop with you! I was raised a Ute, and will die a Ute. I had one hicccup while on my mission and thought about going to BYU, which my father quickly quelled through a rather direct letter. Having lived through the '80s has molded me into a life-long Ute. My dad also speaks of the '66 tournament and I grew up hearing names like Jerry Chambers and Billy McGill. Nothing beat watching a basketball game at the Huntsman or sitting in general admission at rice stadium.

LOL.. i love the qualifier... "and I know a lot of them" yeah, so there goes my observation... can't be true because you know "a lot" of ute fans.

I enjoy the reactionary fan base.. if the "reason" you despise BYU is because of the general attitude, keep choosing to be pissed off. lol...
