Default Coburn to speak at RNC

Good news - it seems the GOP has kindly made room for an actual, you know, conservative at their upcoming convention. After the party had announced that such legendary right-wingers as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rudy Giuliani, and Joe Lieberman would be speaking, there was concern among the fiscal/federal conservative voters that the party wasn't going to bother to include any true conservative in the program. You'd think they'd want to for appearances if nothing else.

So there was some relief today when it was announced today that Senator Tom Coburn, revered as one of the last conservative holdouts on the Hill, has been invited to speak. Personally, I'm kinda hoping he'd call McCain's bluff on the reduced spending thing, but he's said he's going to speak on the dangers of waste in Washington and the need for reform in general.

But what does it say about the party that they barely found room for a conservative at all, and even then only as a last minute deal after negative right-wing press?

Two groups that the current GOP leadership have ignored, pushed out and made to feel like outsiders are civil libertarians and economic conservatives. McCain may still win, but the republicans will suffer significant losses in both houses because of how they've neglected those two factions the last 8 years.

serious identity crisis, the likes of which we haven't seen since MJ tried to play baseball or Garth Brooks pretended to be an alternative rock star named Chris Gaines.

As are other conservatives - see "flip-flopper" in dictionary.

Coburn is the same who proposed the death penalty for MDs who perform abortions. That's real mainstream.

Termed political race he was in as a "battle of good vs evil", with him being the good part of that equation, naturally.

Here's a view from a fellow Oklahoman: "I’m a Republican and it is hard to understand why Tom Coburn takes pride in dividing Oklahoma and ridiculing people. If you disagree with him, you are evil. There’s no discussion, no room for understanding."

Coburn's the type of conservative Dem campaign strategists fantasize about. If he's the standard bearer for conservatives these days, they're in big trouble.
