It's no mystery, it's barbaric.

It comes from Islamic law from which a mufti makes a judgment, after that judgment reaches a certain level, the individual can have the sentence of death upon him.

That, my friend is barbaric.

Yet, like Salman Rushdi, in Islam, the mere use of a word can be the cause for a fatwa of death. Mr. Rushdi never killed anybody and cannot deserve death for mere words, especially telling a bad story. Your countryman, unwittingly made Rushdie famous and rich, whereas he would have been poor.

We have an old saying in America, "Banned in Boston." If something got banned from Puritan days in Boston, it meant others would see it.

When you condemn somebody so publicly, you make him and his cause famous.

I agree with you on this. Which is why I can't figure out why we decided to make a cave dwelling pussy like Osama bin Laden famous. The only thing he accomplished is killing a few thousand americans and knocking down a few buildings. Any hack could accomplish that with far less resources. I guess he also duped us into spending billions of dollars on a worthless war and spreading our military thin. Oh! He also made it possible for the US government to set up a central police force, wire tap americans, and pass the Patriot Act. I guess he accomplished more than I thought. That is very scary. What will we do if we ever face a capable villian?

If one can stop cash flow, then I agree, but given the tribal nature of Arab cultures, it is hard to break through the tribal nature. No imperial power has ever been successful of suppressing the radicalism in the Middle East over a long period. The British tried, and had brief periods of success through brutal, immoral suppression. It is an age old problem that nobody has solved since the 7th Century.
But Bush and his neocon buddies have finally solved the mystery.

Of course, we don't consider it moral to kill children in order to dissuade terrorists.

But I suppose if our backs are against the wall, and we are willing to exterminate everyone in Dresden with firebombs and everyone in Hiroshima and Nagasaki with Nukes, we would be willing to kill the elderly, spouses, and children on a selective basis.

Our backs are far from being against the wall.
that's what the israelis have done to suicide bombers....
