I repeat: McCain's POW status is relevant and fair game. People are free to debate how it affects his judgment and world view now. No one ever claimed that POW status by itself was a qualifier for the presidency (your silly red herring).

And no matter how it affects his judgment, or whether someone agrees with that judgment, it deserves respect for the sacrifice it represents.

Maybe McCain does throw it out too much on occasion.

It's not unique for a politician to leverage public service, especially military service, to increase political notoriety. Every president from 33 through 41 served in the military and for many of them their service helped define them as they entered politics.

The difference for McCain is that his service has continued to define much of his political persona. On the flip side: when I think of McCain his former-POW status is not one the primary attributes that come to mind.
