It's not unique for a politician to leverage public service, especially military service, to increase political notoriety. Every president from 33 through 41 served in the military and for many of them their service helped define them as they entered politics. The difference for McCain is that his service has continued to define much of his political persona. On the flip side: when I think of McCain his former-POW status is not one the primary attributes that come to mind.
