Default Why is Madonna being criticized for

adopting a dirt poor kid from Africa?

Crazy world where this is looked on as terrible and exploitative.

It's really showing the ugly underbelly of modern western culture.

I am not positive, but I think the line of argument is that this kid has parents (or a parent) but they are too poor to take care of him. Thus, rather than adopting him she could donate some money to help them out and keep the family together.

I don't understand the criticism much myself. I understand that she may have greased the wheels of government with a little cash, but that will benefit a ton of children. Net benefit to everybody, especially in a country with so many orphans.

I understand that the mother is dead, and that the father supported the adoption (this is the latest on CNN). They sent a guy out into the bush to confirm or deny reports that he was opposed.

This is nothing but mean-spiritedness.

I think the criticism is more about Madonna's comments on Oprah the other day. According to Sister Padrino, Madonna basically said that the most pressing issure in the world today is that there are kids in Africa that need to be adopted by American families and anyone who doesn't follow her example and adopt a kid from Africa should be ashamed of themselves. Of course, Oprah the know-it-all certainly agreed - but I doubt she'll be running off to Africa to find a kid to save anytime soon.

My wife's comment was that the most pressing issue for her these days is the need to make sure our four kids are taken care of and happy and if Madonna doesn't agree, Madonna can kiss her hiney.
