Default An old-school talk by the High Councilman

Our HC speaker was an old salt-of-the-earth Mormon, with a thick Texas accent.

He hit on many topics, including his gratitude for having a Heavenly Mother. He also went into Mormon cosmology, including that Joseph Smith told John Taylor that reports of the Solar System were wrong, that instead of just 9 planets in the solar system, there were actually 12.

It was nice to get a Joseph Smith-type talk, with an expanding Mormon cosmos.

I'm getting tired of Jay Santos-type talks.

Joseph Smith must have had more flexible standards for classifying planets than those currently in charge of such things. I think we are now back to 8 planets.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

If you add Charon, it is 12.

Of course, this HC speaker also said "What is 9 plus 3? Thirteen."

We see in the scriptures the repeated use of certain "magic" numbers in various situations.

3 - earth is the 3rd closest planet to the sun
12 - the number of planets in the solar system

As I understand it, the reason the scientists decided not to consider "dwarf" planets as planets was because if they did so, it would have resulted in a lot more than 12 planets. There's a bunch of those suckers out past Pluto.

I think you're just bored. Solar system talks at least will keep you awake in sacrament meeting.
