Default The Harmonists and the Mormons

If you haven't ever considered the influence of George Rapp (the pietist founder of Harmony, Pennsylvania) on Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and Mormonism, you're in for a treat.

I was expecting a little bit more profound connection.

Fascinating stuff. Philipsburg is only about 20 minutes away from me.

Okay, so I had the wrong Philipsburg. The Harmonist Philipsburg is about an hour and a half away.

The more I investigate this, the more I think there are some pretty strong connections between Harmonists and Mormons. Rapp's prophetic calling; the imminent return of Jesus. Communal living.

It's possible that these are both elements of a wider set of phenomena related to the Second Great Awakening or other social currents in this section of the 19th century United States. But, in that case, the connections are still there, albeit as ones derived from the same catalysts.

I think I'm going to try to sneak out to Old Economy Village in the next month or so.
