What a horrible statement. It boggles my mind that a man this heartless become an apostle.
The quote was in the first edition. Anyone know if it was changed in subsequent editions?

The irony of these little quips shines to anyone who's read the book. Keep at it. I'm enjoying it, sort of.

I'm sure it was changed. I'm not using this to discredit the church. In fact, I'm using to point out the progress of the church in dealing with this matter--something I'm proud of. I do wonder how anyone comes to the point of saying something like this, but the 50s were a different time, I guess. I have no idea.

Why I added the "sort of". I always feel dirtier after talking with you.

No kidding. I am sure it stopped zero suicides and heaped massive amounts of guilt and heartache on grieving survivors.

We were doing fine until you and Swarthout let your inner pricks loose.

Stories like this and the suicide quote makes me wonder if BRM had a form of high-functioning autism. Photographic memory, etc. but limited capacity for nuance or processing human emotion or compassion.

Perhaps Asperger Syndrome?

While I can't deny that there were many things about BRM that made it tough to admire him, I will always prefer to remember the talk he gave in the last General Conference before he passed away. It left no doubt in my mind that he truly loved the Lord and the Gospel.
