Sorry, I am not quite sure where to post this (religion, current events, etc.). There have been some articles out there recently about delaying the release of the .xxx domain. Basically what this does is that it forces sexually explicit websites to register under the .xxx domain name. I believe that there will be no more .coms, etc. for x-rated websites.

Then, I noticed that this is being blocked by the Bush administration...so my question is, why? I read that they don't want to be legitimizing these websites but doesn't it make sense to take them off the normal use of .com and push them to a domain name ending .xxx so that there is no mistaking what you are looking for. Besides the claim that it would legitimize these sites (which I think is a silly argument), is there any reason why this is not a good idea? thoughts? Down the road, I would love to see a way that you would have to register initially to visit any .xxx site, I just think that would cut out the inadvertent visiting of these sites. But maybe I am missing something.

although the counter argument of legitimacy makes sense as well. If I were King for a Day, I would allow them, so they could have their little haven and leave the rest of us alone.

I haven't been following this. Are they going to force porn sites off of .com? or just allow them more names to register with on .xxx?

I don't see how they could enforce people giving up their .com registrations.

I think down the road they want to make all sexually explicit sites move over to the .xxx domain. But I dont think that happens right off the bat.

I guess I just don't understand what they mean by legitimizing them. Aren't they already being legitimized by the fact that they exist legally with the saim domain names as other legitimate businesses? I like the idea of forcing them into a separate domain, makes plenty of sense to me.

SteelBlue...I agree entirely. Why is making them use an .xxx domain name legitimizing them? That doesn't make sense. Basically they are being told that if you have a sexually explicit site, you have to go under this domain name.

My thought would be that every computer that visits any .xxx site has to be registered to show that you are over the age of 21. The cookie can be stored so that the porn user can go back as often as ever...but that initial viewing you have to be registered. It just becomes a key to visit those kinds of sites. To me, if you do not want that in your house, you never register and no minor in the house can view those sites. It would seem to get rid of all of the inadvertent visits to these sites done by young people.

Anyway...I'm just surprised that it is the Republicans that are backing off of this one as it seems to be something they would like.

Why 21 and not 18? One only has to be 18 to legally purchases porn over the counter...not that I've done it!
