Remember the last 2 hires. Underwhelming. Crowton. Then Mendenhall. We should expect similar disappointing choices will be made.

But I'm willing to roll the dice. I'd rather something new that can raise the ceiling.

We absolutely need someone who can recruit NFL talent.

The Mendenhall choice was underwhelming. He was boring but he was also the 4th or 5th guy they went after.

I would not describe the Crowton hire as "underwhelming" at the time. He came with a ton of fanfare not just around BYU, but nationally. He was in the NFL. He was supposed to be some kind of genius. Unfortunately he was just crazy and we found out later that the Bears were all too happy to see him leave because he was such a nut.

I could brag and say at the time I felt like I was in the minority for having major reseravtions about him. He struggled to win more than 6 games at La Tech. Maybe that was partially just a reaction to the fans who were celebrating that Lavell was leaving, which I thought was beyond crazy. We got what we deserved for that I guess.

Crowton's tenure started with a bang. Undefeated until Hawaii.

But it turned out he was a mad scientist and a poor administrator.

I think Bronco was an average performer given his schedule and recruiting talent. And underperformed on recruiting historically.

Bronco won most of the games he was supposed to, and almost none of the games he was not supposed to.

His highwater mark was the win against Oklahoma. And the win against TCU with Beck (I was at that game). Those games were a long time ago.

And Bronco did poorly in rivalry games, which is unforgivable.

Bronco's main problem has been recruiting. We used to have 20-25 former players in the NFL at all times. Now we're lucky to have half a dozen. The real problem for BYU is that there are still lots of LDS guys in the NFL. But very few of them are choosing BYU anymore. That's on Bronco. The BCS/P5 takeover of college football has something to do with it, but not all.

I agree. I was pleased that Tom Holmoe specifically said the new coach will need to be successful recruiting. He must see the obvious talent deficit on the field that we all see.

Bronco takes most of the blame for that, but especially early on he was reacting to the disgusting sex scandals under Crowton. And keep in mind, there were even some LDS players involved in those. So that's when Bronco came in and went a little overboard even with recruiting LDS players. He's not really been able to recover from his "players should recruit us" idea.
