Shocking movie reviews
http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=2416655
"Charlie was good but it will make almost anyone weep." Weep from what? Laughter. I know if somebody identifies a movie he/she likes what NOT to watch.

Charley was a slut and was portrayed as the victim.
What a crock.

You guys threw me for a minute. I was thinking about the Cliff Robertson movie based on the story Flowers for Algernon which is very sad, but then I realized you were talking about bad mormon literature made into a bad mormon movie.

You've got two major choices with a film like Charly:
1. Try to take it seriously and end up wanting to wander onto the Interstate. 2. Take it as unintentional humor and laugh yourself to injury as you wonder if it can possibly get any worse. Charly and most of the Halestorm films are Mormoxploitation. I think I just coined that term. If they had been made 30 years ago they should have been played at grindhouse theaters with the Faces of Death (you old timers might remember those theaters).

I'm not familiar with the Cliff Roberston movie. I am, unfortunately with the horrendous book by the LDS author Wuss Wimpy or whatever his name is. I will never see the movie of that written pile of refuse.

I read the book Flowers for Algernon in Jr. High, but have not seen the movie Charly. If memory serves me correctly, it was a good book. At least as far as books about mentally handicapped people exponentially raising their IQ and then having it all taken away from them go.
As for the Mormon movie Charley, I still remember standing in line at the computer lab in the Wilkinson Center basement while the Lab Assistants discussed seeing it the night before. One of the dudes was the kind of guy who still wore his mission Doc Martens with his jeans and a short-sleeve white shirt. Mention was made that it was a movie that a guy shouldn't be ashamed of crying at. I thought, "Hmmm...that's kind of weird." But the next thing he said sealed my commitment to never, ever see the movie. He said,"It is the best movie I've seen since You've Got Mail." If I were MPFunk, I would have punched him in the face or kidney right then and there. |
