Things you might miss out on in home school
1) organized jr high and hs sports (yes I said MIGHT MISS)
2) choir, band, orchestra 3) learning a language from someone who speaks it 4) speech/debate/UIL competitions 5) drama/plays/musicals 6) study council/student government 7) learning relatively "arcane" subjects from someone who knows them well, like your more complicated chemistry (and doing chem lab), physics, etc. 8) Getting beat up 9) Having your religion made fun of 10) school lunches 11) talks with the principal 12) In School Suspension (ISS) 13) physical fitness tests where you are compared to other students 14) tether ball 15) 4-square 16) lockers 17) school libraries 18) recess 19) pin dodge ball 20) timed rope climb It makes me sick to think of all the things that homeschool kids miss. |

If you grow up in SU's home, you can scratch #9 off your list.

1. Learning how to tolerate those from different races, creeds and cultures.
2. Listening, understanding and critically thinking about contradicting secular and moral positions. 3. Engaging in pro and con debates on topical issues. Seriously, until we have more empirical data, the jury remains out on the merits of homeschooling. I understand the hs advocates point to higher average ACT scores (22.8 compared to 21.0 in ps). More relevant numbers - including test score comparisons of college bound seniors, admission % to top tier schools and college graduation rates will come out over time. |

I admit if I lived in Oklahoma or Mississippi or Utah I might be forced to homeschool.

But think of the cultural diversity exposure you be depriving your little ones of if you lived in the Mississippi delta?
