My sons are in youth and peewee football. Yesterday in a game one of the boys came out with a knee injury. The coach turned to him and said, "tomorrow I want you to go to Joe's [a local sporting goods store] and get one of those knee cages." End of conversation. No looking at the knee, no concern about having an expert look at the knee.

Another boy came out with a pain in the back of his knee. Another coach said "are you hurt or injured?" The kid looked at him not knowing how to answer (what would you expect a 13 year old to do?). The coach then says "play through the pain."

Coaches are often jerks and the ones at the youth level are often high school wannabe cast offs. There is no way I'm not at every game this year.

football is risky.

That rah-rah tough stuff has its place - but not in little league, or really even in high school. Kids' bodies are too immature, and it's just a game.

When I was 14, I dislocated my shoulder making a "routine" hit. I wasn't a very good player, and the coach didn't believe that I was really hurt. So he made me get up and do the drill again. When I got home, I popped my shoulder back in and just took a lot of advil. I've never hurt so bad in my life, and I was too scared of showing up "hurt" to practice the next day.

I played throughout high school, and came into my own a little bit (I was never "good" but I played). I got a job as an assistant coach at my old high school while I was in college, and I loved seeing this old little-league coach wishing he was me as we had some success and won a state championship.

My shoulder is still pretty weak (compared to the other), though, and it hurts like hell on rainy days. I hope that old coach rots in hell.
