Cougar Historians...question for you
How did BYU settle on 'Cougars' as a mascot?

It started back in 1894 with the Legend of the Ute Indians traveling to Utah county. Supposedly, the Indians were looking to settle down in Happy Valley with the Pioneers dominating SL valley. However, they ran into some Mountain Lions, aka Cougars which devoured them.
When the U of U picked the Utes as their mascot, BYU's natural choice was something that devoured the Utes, so they went with Cougars. |
