In it he says BYU was not considered at all for Pac 10 expansion. Marching orders to Scott: BYU--not a chance in hell. |

The capacity of Colorado's football stadium is 53,000.
RES has 45,000. Pac 10 broke up its round-robin format, and thus a lot of rivalries over this. Again, Utes have to be pinching themselves. |

The problem for any conference is there are very few glory programs.
You got ND, Texas, Michigan, USC, OU, above the rest. So if you're a conference languishing somewhat, whom do you add? The BCS conferences already HAVE the biggest and most populous schools, so unless you get ND or steal one from another conference, you add a smaller school. so then you have to look at schools with growth potential. Pick a growing metro area. What are they going to be? Or BYU due to the size of its sponsoring institution and a fan devotion. It's really not rocket science. But politics, pride and biases also run wild.

Languishing conferences don't add anyone. They get picked off.

Saw this awhile ago...
..and I agree with the article, though having the championship game is a benefit that isn't mentioned that is probably one of the big reasons the Pac-10 still wanted to expand. The Pac-10 hasn't been a bed of roses for the AZ schools either. There is reason for Utes to celebrate, but I think BYU has more options now than it ever has.
