For my money its Tony Rice. He could play with anybody and his voice had soul. He played bluegrass, jazz, blues, folk, and he did it all well.
Thanks for that link. I'm not familiar with him at all. That was impressive. His technique with both left and right hands was terrific.

Eddie Van Halen, Gary Hoey and Joe Bonamossa are three of the best I've ever heard.

The "Who is best" argument is much too subjective. You named three extremely talented guitarists as well.

It wouldn't even be easy to break it down to who is best in each genre.

Here's a parody video somebody made of John Petrucci's instruction video. I found it quite hilarious.

This topic comes up from time to time and my observation is that some of very best get left out because the people making the list are only really familiar with rock and roll guitar players.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the master of them all:

Good one. My dad was a huge Chet fan so I grew up on his stuff. He was a tremendously influential guitarist.

You would get no argument from me. CHet Atkins was unbelievable. It is a little like comparing fiddlers and violinists, however, as finger picking, flat picking and other styles are a ltitle hard to compare straight across.
