Default digital camera advice

My Canon PowerShot, 4.0 megapixels, is about to die and I am glad because I really want a new camera. I bought it about 5 years ago and my biggest complaint is the delayed shutter. I feel like I miss out on a lot of good shots because too much time elapses between pushing the button and the picture being taken. Have the shutters on digital cameras gotten any better in the last 5 years? It almost makes me want to go back to film. Anyway, does anyone have any good camera recommendations? I don't want to spend more than $400 or at the most $500.

Go with the new Canon Powershot S-1000.

You may be surprised to discover how much prices have come down over the past five years. Last week I bought an Olympus Stylus with 7.1 megapixels, 10x zoom, built-in video camera, and all of the extras for only $179 at Target. 2 gig memory cards are only $49.

Here's the same advice I gave NS, but it will cost you about $600. Well worth the money:

That is a nice camera ... I think the Cannon is a little easier to use though.

Can I assume you own a Cannon?

I like Nikon and think it's very simple to use, though I haven't ever used a Cannon so I can't compare. Honestly, the only reason I bought the Nikon was that it cost a bit less and two lenses were included in the kit.

Next up for me is a Nikon D200.

Are you aware that there is a D300 now?

I heard that it is making it's debut sometime this month. I am really tempted to look at that for an upgrade, but I was going to ask you how you like the D200 before I made the decision. So, how is the 200?
