Default Joe Pa reduces the punishment.

After a fight this spring, Joe Paterno decided to punish his players by having them help clean the stadium after home games.

After Saturday's beat-down, Coach decided the players didn't have to do it.

What do you think? Is the coach getting soft?

Incidentally, the team has had several more brushes with the law this school year, including a starting running back being charged with rape. He's now awaiting trial (and is presumed innocent until proven guilty, of course), but it's still bad press.

I love JoePa, but I think he gets away with a lot of things that any other coach would get canned for.

Like his recent road rage incident that's been buried by the press?

That guy's HS is 1.5 miles up the street from my office. Another poster child for wonderful Allentown.

Exactly. Kind of funny, but if Joe Pa yelled at my wife, I'd kick his ass. Then I'd move.

I'm also thinking of several underage drinking citations that players have received - not really all that serious, except that it's habitual, and Joe basically told the press that the kids were freshmen (obviously underage) and wouldn't play anyway, so what's the point in disciplining them? Seems to miss the point, to me. Someone who's on the team is still responsible to represent the team regardless of playing time.

Or the time at the Orange Bowl in 2006 when he insinuated that women are asking to be sexually assaulted when they act and dress so provocatively. People just chalked it up to being old.

At any rate, I feel that other coaches at other schools would be shown the door (he's not even winning all that much), but he's too valuable as a fund-raiser / recruiter for the school (IMO).
