Default The Departed

I watched The Departed on DVD over the weekend.

Gimme Shelter playing as a gangster movie kicks in has to give you goosebumps.

DiCaprio was great--made the movie. Nicholson great as well. Damon's character was evil and annoying, but he played it right. Sheen--good. Walhberg's character--over the top in an unbelievable/fake way. Baldwin's character--over the top in a more believable, cool way.

Coolest line: Jack's "in THIS country"

Dicaprio and his character were great. But I didn't believe the stuff about "all I want is my life/name back." Why? he came to the job with no money, no life, no family, but a passion to get the bad guys. What changed his motivation? The movie didn't explain. Also, how could some low level police cop delete a personnel file making DiCaprio non-existant? Lame.

Scorcese says this is his first movie with a plot. Maybe there was too much plot. At times in the last 45 minutes you knew there had to be x amount of scenes showing y amount of plot to finish it right, and that's exactly what you got. The plot felt constricting the last part of the movie.

If I'm gonna get nudity in a movie, damn straight it better be female.

I did like Damon and Dicaprio both getting with the girl and their constrasting styles and the love triangle. That was a good inclusion.

Overall: good movie don't know if I can say great. Not up to par with other great movies in its genre like Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, etc.

Ending--still not sure. Have to let it sit in a while, but right now I'm thinking the ending left me a little unsatisfied.

P.S. The Comfortably Numb live "edgy" version bugged me the first time I watched. That version didn't sound like Gilmore was very comfortably numb, more like angry and agitated. And the scene dictated the true feeling of the song. But I watched again, and realized my discomfort was mostly in my familiarity and longing for the original tune and on second thought, I loved the live version of the song and liked how it fit a little better.

The ending killed it for me. Let's just kill everyone with a single headshot and add one more turn on top of another? Completely ridiculous. If you're going to go out like that give me a shootout involving everyone like Heat and then a face off between the two main characters. Just way too over the top for me.

Easy now. Some of us still haven't even seen the movie.

I tried to watch this last night. TERRIBLE. Unwatchable. (Not unusual for academy award best picture winners, actually.) Don't bother trying to watch it. Hasn't Nicholson's schtick worn a little thin by now? Dya think? The story was far fetched, and the writing so bad it hurt my ears. Schorsese gone totally to seed.

Beyond being bad the movie was offensive. I have high tolerance for sex and violence. Here it was 98% gratuitous. Blood splashing everywhere, inartful, and pointless. Who cares about ugly ill-bred, barbarous men bashing one another's heads in? The novelty wore off long ago.

Waters, when is your organization going to come out and say something against movies repeatedly depicting shrinks sleeping with their patients as if it's normal and okay even romantic and sexy?

This will be one of those academy award winners completely forgotten in ten years.

If you want to see a great gangster movie recently released see City of God.

I was ambivalent about seeing it, but it sounds very ordinary. Gratuitiuos violence and sex doesn't make a movie IMHO. I'll watch almost anything, but with limited time it is nice to know what to avoid.

Every Scorsese movie has gratuitous violence in it. That's never changed about his movies.

(disclaimer: I love mob movies)

Finally got around to watching this movie last night. After reading these reviews I wasn't expecting too much. I thought it was great. Outstanding plot. It was violent for sure, but it's a mob movie, for crying out loud. What are you expecting?

As Jay said, soundtrack was top notch. Cover on comfortably numb was a bit odd, but I still liked it.

As for the acting, Jack was awesome, as one would expect. This is a perfect role for him. But Leo was equally fabulous. I think we can all officially forgive him for the Titanic. Excellent acting all the way around for the rest of the cast. I was a little shocked/disappointed with the ending at first, but in hindsight, I liked it.

On your recommendation, I'll see it, but I'll never take Lenny seriously because of Titanic.
