Default Salman Rushdie is awarded knighthood!

But Iran and Pakistan are upset.

I just don't understand what's wrong with Rushdie.

It's the equivalent of President Hinckley issuing a fatwa for Steve Benson or something.

Even the guy that translated The Satanic Verses into Japanese got murdered.

MindfulCoug: In your estimation, what percentage of the Iranian population wants to kill Rushdie? Can you explain to us the logic behind the fatwah/hukm?

This one aspect of Islam makes intolerable for educated human beings, the desire and willingness to kill another human being over a book, where the person does not physically threaten you, your family or your livelihood.

But you wouldn't know that if she were observing hijab (wearing bedsheets).

That's the problem with western civilization. We can tell when a woman is "hot" before we marry her.

I find the hijab to be very sexy. You can imagine a gorgeous woman is underneath.

Of course, reality usually disappoints.

Forgive my literary buffoonery, but what exactly did The Satanic Verses actually say? I know people were up in arms about it back in the day, but I never knew why.

I think that most muslims get a trial run during the engagement, though. Then they can always back out of the marriage if they're unimpressed.

i would tell you the mystery behind the fatwa if you just tell me WHY this book and its writer has been receiving so many rewards in spite of fact that it seems offensive to more that one and half billion of people.

From wikipedia:

The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie's fourth novel, first published in 1988 and inspired in part by the life of Muhammad. The title refers to the Satanic Verses, a possible interpolation in the Qur'an described by Ibn Ishaq in his biography of Muhammad (the oldest surviving text). Some Islamic and most non-Muslim Western historians and commentators on the Qur'an have accepted this story of Muhammad's momentary acceptance of the verses. However, a common Muslim viewpoint is that the existence of the verses is just a fabrication created by non-Muslims.

(Barbara, don't give me crap over quoting wikipedia)

I tried to read it, but I hated his frilly writing style and couldn't get more than 10 pages in.

So I can't answer your question.

There is one person that loves his work that I know, but he is banned from this site.
