Wow. Unfortunately, they have learned what it is like for a family member to die on a trek, just as the pioneers of yore did.

It's a lesson obviously they wish they avoided.

I live very near to where this happened and what's sad is that there are hundreds and of miles of trails and dirt roads in the immediate area that they could have been on.

Also the latest reports indicate that they were in the roadway, not on the shoulder. Most of the roadway through the canyon has little or no shoulders. They don't even have guard rails.

that's a little bit crazy in my book. I hope others will take heed.
