Default Water stops

Anyone else hate drinking during a race? If I try to drink from those cups while running I almost drown. Yesterday I swallowed wrong and probably looked like I was puking water. And, even if I slow down or stop, I still feel like crap after drinking during a race. It seems like it just settles in my gut and makes me feel sick so I think I end up not drinking enough during a long race and end up dehydrated and dragging at the end. Any suggestions?

practice drinking on your long runs and use what you practice with on your race.

I don't run. But when I bike, I like drinking. Beause I don't want to bonk or cramp (and I have done both).

Pretty much. I don't ever remember in a race thinking "boy, I'd really like a drink of water." So I have to force myself to drink and I feel like crap for a while, then it goes away. Also, the thought of sucking down gel or eating anything repulses me too.

A person needs to learn how to drink and how to eat. If one wishes to go beyond 10ks consistently, one will need to learn this skill. This is coming from somebody who knows the feeling.

I can job 13 without drink but it would feel better to race it with such stuff. And my main failing in Ironmen is nutrition. I typically bonk at the end of the bike.

Sea Chicken I hate drinking while running as well. I take water everytime it's offered though and it doesn't make me feel sick. I just hate the fact that I nearly drown just getting one gulp down me; but I refuse to walk or stop to drink, it hurts too much to get going again.

I take a small swig every .5 miles or 1 km of running. keeps my hydrated without gulping down a lot of water.

I understand the queasiness from gel, they make me dry heave after a certain point. I don't have any advice to offer about the drinking, unfortunately. I always look forward to the aid stations after about 5-6 miles.

I've never been really interested in drinking while running. But I've also never really run in the heat. When Steel and I went on a few long runs over the winter up to 13 miles, I never once felt any need to get a drink. I suspect a longer run or more heat would change that.

Nutrition and hydration are always my FIL's downfall in ultraraces. He can usually do okay until about mile 60-65, but then crashes hard. A few years ago I paced him from mile 50-62 at the Wasatch 100. I tried the whole time to get something in him - Gatorade, water, coke, gel. It came back up as soon as it went down. He made it to mile 83 that year.
