Utah disqualifies itself from shining on any undergraduate ranking. But the cream at Utah and the cream at BYU are similar in quality. By the way, Utah will eventually have to limit admissions and I understand it is moving that way already.
I don't know that it really has anything to do with state law, I think that might just be SU spouting out something that sounds good. However, I didn't get accepted to BYU right out of high school (it was a very dark time in my life), but I was actively recruited by the u.

Yes it does have to do with state law. It is a decision of the Utah legislature not to limit admissions to Utah. This leads to the lower admission standards. The Utah legislature needs to pull its head out of its ass and start treating it like the flagship school of the State of Utah. Raise admission standards, decrease admissions, and funnel more students to the other Universities and Community colleges.

It is a policy decision of the Utah legislature to keep the admission standards at Utah low.

I'm surpirsed BDB doesn't know there isn't a public university in the country whose admissions standards aren't heavily regulated by state law. They're funded by tax dollars after all. The model funk describes is the one followed in most states and the Utah state legislature should follow it.

By the way, BDB, BYU law school courted me. It offered me a scholarship but I turned it down.

Each year, the Credits and Admissions Committee determines the next academic year's Admissions Index The current academic index can be found at http://www.acs.utah.edu/prod/bin/stu...dmission-index or by contacting the Admissions Office at (801) 581-7281. A student will be considered for Admissions to the University of Utah if the student meets the following requirements*:

• Has or will graduate from an accredited high school.
• Has satisfactorily completed all course requirements
• Has a cumulative high school GPA of at least a 2.6 on a 4.0 scale.
• Has an ACT composite of 18 (SAT total score 860) or better
• Has the approved current year's index
http://www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/freshman.htm

I guess you need a 2.6 to get in, and an 18 on the ACT. Plus the standards are reconsidered yearly.

I think even this low standard reflects a tightening of admissions standards from what they were not so long ago. As the state grows in population Utah will have no choice but to continue to tighten the screws and move closer to the Big Ten or Pac 10 model.
