Default glorified-stake-center temples

How come the church isn't building anymore cheap temples like the one in Dallas?

I just saw a pic of the outside of the Draper Temple.

When I was growing up, the baptismal font in Dallas was adorned in white ceramic, with natural light from the ceiling. It was nice and airy and bright. Now it has no natural light, the walls are that woven fiber brown stuff that is used in some chapels, it is dimly lit. Trust me, there is no feeling of opulence in that room.

Maybe the church decided that these cut-rate temples were a mistake.

Yes, the temples are too cheaply constructed. I can see how that's a valid complaint.

Complaint or observation? The Church experiments. Sometimes it wants to have its edifices erected aesthetically and sometimes it relies upon functionality. To me, it is an eternal administrative tension which will always exist.

Maybe the Draper members are more faithful than the Dallas members, especially the ones that post 15,000 acerbic posts that are highly critical of the church they claim to belong to.

Exactly. How can we saints in Zion have our just reward if members outside of Utah think they deserve the same?

False choice there, Archaea. Good architecture can be functional, beautiful, and well-built (the third quality you missed). Doesn't matter, from the hut to the temple, any edifice can and should embody all three.

Mike -- why'd they take away the natural light in the Dallas temple? Some misguided renovation?

I didn't say i agree with that assessment, but it takes a lot more talent to make a small, functional buildiing aesthetically pleasing, and we often don't find that talent.

It looks made from cinderblocks -- an ugly effect when its wet. Did they not foresee this?

The Draper temple looks liked it was modeled with legos first. Very blocky and square. Fortressy. Certainly not elegant.
